Forest Under Attack

2021 set an abysmal record in Russia, with 17 million hectares of forest destroyed in wildfires. But it is only one of the problems that have caused mass deforestation in recent years. Illegal logging, slash-and-burn agriculture, contraband forest exports are all adding to disturbingly rapid forest extinctions. Besides, ecosystem disruption caused by uncontrolled logging leads to landslides and soil erosion. All the while the dry and damaged trees carry pests that can travel long distances and infect healthy areas. While volunteers and WWF reps are struggling against illegal activity, it’s not enough to save the remaining woodland. So, is there any way to stop the disaster?
