Black Holes of Yamal

Russian scientists are about to unravel the mystery of several giant holes in the permafrost of the Yamal Peninsula. The ‘black holes’ began to appear in the ground in around 2013, baffling both the local Nenets population of reindeer herders and visiting scientists.

Residents said 'otherworldly' forces were at work, while researchers from Russia and abroad are exploring other possibilities, such as climate change or gases trapped in the permafrost. At last, they might have come close to explaining the mystery of the Yamal craters.
