Russia and Belarus talk trade, energy and integration

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with his Belarussian counterpart, Aleksandr Lukashenko. The two leaders discussed trade, energy issues and efforts to move toward a Russia-Belarus Union State.

The two leaders agreed to keep the gas and oil prices that were set for 2009. The Presidents ordered their minister to work on that subject.

Medvedev and Lukashenko also agreed to intensify efforts to bring an economic union into force. An agreement on a union was signed a decade ago in an attempt to integrate the economies of Russia and Belarus. Many of its provisions are still up in the air, such as a common currency and single citizenship.

The sides have, however, adopted their budget for the coming year, which is around $160 million.
