Recession heats up political strife in Ukraine

On Thursday, more than 5,000 opposition supporters protested against the continuing economic and political crisis in the country in the Ukrainian city of Simferopol.

A large crowd gathered in the central square of Simferopol, in Crimea. “Stop the Crisis, Bring the Authorities to Justice” was the motto displayed at the protest.

The protest was organised by Ukraine's oppositional Party of Regions, which plans to initiate early elections if the Prime Minister doesn't present an anti-crisis plan soon.

The Crimean rally is seen as an overture to much larger protests scheduled in Kiev on March 27. On the same day, Odessa and sixteen other Ukrainian cities, including those in the country's west, will see protest demonstrations.

Official polls suggest that more than 40 per cent of the Ukrainians are prepared to participate in authorized protest actions, and nearly one-fourth will dare demonstrate without permission.
