Interview with Dmitry Peskov
The Serbian province of Kosovo is expected to declare its independence within days. Russia's Presidential Press Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who attended the conference, told RT why Kosovo's intentions threaten global security.
Delegates at a world security conference in Munich were told by Russia the move would open up a Pandora's box.
“This will seriously jeopardise the whole legitimacy of international relations and international law itself. It will also jeopardise the effectiveness of the UN and the UN Security Council.
Unfortunately, we do not have anything else in this world playing this global role, being a global forum for all the countries. I do not think it is a proper time to speak about any counter-measures by Russia. It is another matter of a clash between countries with different approaches. The only thing that is obvious, as it was repeated by Mr Ivanov, is that a Pandora's box will be opened. A huge amount of precedents on the territory of Europe, on the territory of Caucasus will be set.
It was a very interesting remark by Mr Ivanov that those European countries who will probably immediately recognise the independence of Kosovo will have to think about, for example, Northern Cyprus and other situations. We all know the existence of these situations on the territory of the former Soviet Union, in Abkhazia, for example. We still cannot find any differences between Kosovo and Abkhazia or Kosovo and Northern Cyprus,” said Mr Peskov.
