Forecaster predicts ‘no real winter’ in Russia

Exceptionally warm weather could bring spring to Moscow earlier than usual, as the average temperatures in the Russian capital until the end of winter is expected to be 5°C above average, according to Russian meteorologists.

The start of 2025 has been marked by unusual warmth as temperatures have hovered well above seasonal norms across most of the country, Evgeny Tishkovets of the Phobos weather center in Moscow said on Friday on his Telegram channel.

“There will be no real winter. Winter is clearly in decline. The start of the year is striking with an anomaly of warmth across much of our country, with temperatures deviating positively from the climatic norm,” he wrote.

The first ten days of January in Moscow were significantly warmer than usual, with an average temperature of about 5°C above the average. In some areas, temperatures were 4-9°C or even 12°C warmer than usual, according to the meteorologist.

Tishkovets said that the Russian capital is currently experiencing “meteorological spring,” as the average daily temperature is above 0°C with snow cover five times lower than usual for mid-winter.

“We should not expect a large amount of precipitation, and therefore, serious snowdrifts,” he said, not ruling out, however, some “winter surprises” with subzero temperatures and snowfalls before winter ends.

He noted that the beginning of spring will be marked by “extremely variable” weather conditions. The average monthly temperature in March is forecasted to be about 4°C above normal. In April, the temperature is also expected to be 3°C higher than the long-term average.
