Sergey Lavrov has served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 2004. Born in Moscow in 1950, he graduated from the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Moscow State Institute of International Relations. in 1972. That same year, he began his career at the Soviet Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Lavrov is fluent in English, French, and Sinhalese, and holds the title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation. He has received several government awards for his service.
