‘Welcome to hell’: Hamburg burns, G20 protests spiral (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

About 50,000 people took part in the anti-G20 protests Saturday, according to a statement from German police.

While most demonstrations were peaceful, officers did use their batons and deploy a water hose to control a crowd who were throwing bottles at police during the March in Millerntorplatz, read the statement.

Four officers were injured in the incident, but were able to continue in the line of duty.

RT’s Lizzie Phelan, who is in Hamburg, said police are struggling to regain control of Schulterblatt street. Clashes have resumed in the push to prevent officers from entering.

Some clashes have broken out between police and G20 protesters at a demo in Hamburg city center on Saturday.

Speaking Saturday about his bilateral meeting with the US President, Putin said the “Trump we see on TV is very much different from the real person”, and added he felt relations between the two countries could at least be partially restored. Trump described the meeting as “tremendous”.

First Lady Melania Trump was sent in to separate US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a bid to end their two-hour talk on Friday, according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Hamburg residents have been critical of their country’s decision to host the summit. One local compared Friday night’s violence to “civil war”.
