Russian gun-rights activist Butina to be released from US prison on November 5 – report

Russian citizen Maria Butina, who was sentenced in the US to 18 months in prison on charges of conspiring to act as a foreign agent, will be released on November 5, TASS said on Wednesday. The report cited officials in the US Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The Russian gun-rights activist remains at the detention center in Alexandria, Virginia, and the date of her transfer to a US federal prison is unknown, Sputnik quoted Alexandria Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Amy Bertsch as saying on Tuesday.

Butina’s lawyer Robert Driscoll said his client may be transferred to a US federal prison at any time.

US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan last month imposed a sentence that matched the prison term prosecutors requested and agreed to have Butina, 30, deported back to Russia after she completes her incarceration. The sentence included the nine months that Butina had already served in jail since her July arrest.
