14 people killed in Boko Haram raid in Nigeria

At least 14 people, including a woman and a child, have been killed in an attack on a military checkpoint in north-eastern Nigeria, AFP reports, citing local residents and military sources. The Islamist militants stormed the checkpoint in Bunari village near the garrison town of Monguno in Borno state late on Friday, AFP says, adding that the news of the attack came late due to poor communication. The militants managed to overpower the local garrison but the attack was eventually repelled with the help of reinforcements. Still, the extremists managed to seize some weapons and equipment. "Four [military] vehicles including an APC [armored personnel carrier] and a gun truck were carted away by the terrorists," a source in the military told AFP, confirming that 11 soldiers were killed in the fighting. The attack also took lives of three civilians.
