Vanuatu evacuates island over volcano threat

On Friday, Vanuatu, a small nation sitting on the Pacific Ocean's seismic “Ring of Fire”, ordered the compulsory evacuation of thousands of people from Ambae Island due to a threat posed by a volcano. A similar evacuation was ordered last September. Vanuatu's government has been encouraging Ambae residents to accept a permanent relocation since March, when some 10,000 were living on the island.
