Missing Thai junior football team found alive in caves after missing for 9 days
12 boys and their football coach missing in caves for nine days have been found alive, Thai authorities have confirmed. The boys, aged 11-16 from the Moo Pa junior football team, disappeared into the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on June 23. A search was commenced when a ranger of the National Park alerted authorities of the missing boys after seeing their unclaimed belongings at the entrance to the cave.
The cave system is 10 kilometers long, and is considered to be one of the most difficult cave systems to navigate due to narrow passages and winding tunnels, and risk of flooding during the wet season which spans from July to November.
At a press conference at the cave entrance, the Chiang Rai governor said that rescue teams still have a long way to go. “Our mission is to search, rescue and return,” Osottanakorn said. “So far we just found them. Next mission is to bring them out from the cave and send them home.”
