Catalonia regains self-control from Madrid as new government sworn in

Catalonia’s new government was sworn in on Saturday, thus automatically ending Madrid’s rule over the region. As new leader Quim Torra, a close aide to former Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont, took office, he vowed to further push for independence. Catalonian autonomy was revoked by former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy after the region held an independence referendum in October. Rajoy himself was ousted from power on Friday over a corruption scandal in his party.
