Bavarian CSU, Merkel’s ally, re-elects Seehofer as leader

The Christian Social Union (CSU), the Bavarian sister party to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has re-elected Bavarian governor Horst Seehofer as its leader. Seehofer, who won with 83.7 percent support, is a critic of Chancellor Merkel’s ‘open-door’ refugee policy and says European countries need to protect the common border and deny entry to those who do not qualify.
