Six medics appeal death sentences in Libya

Five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya for infecting hundreds of children with HIV have appealed against their sentences A Palestinian doctor has also appealed his sentence.

Libyan prosecution accused them of starting an epidemic in the late 1990s.

The European Union has called the verdicts unfair and stepped up pressure on Tripoli appealing for their release.

The appeal to the Supreme Court is the last chance for the defence of the nurses and the doctor to have their guilty verdicts overturned.

Meantime, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the case by the middle of May, 2007.
