Sharapova, Vujacic announce engagement, plans to settle down
Vujacic broke the news to the media on Thursday night after the Lakers defeated the Golden State Warriors in LA.
“We are engaged and are both very happy,” the lucky sports star was quoted as saying, without specifying when the wedding is to take place.
His statement was reportedly confirmed by Sharapova’s agent.
The 26-year-old Slovenian NBA player and the 23-year-old former top of the world have been dating for about a year.
According to Vujacic, he romantically proposed to Maria on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting.
“It was probably old school,” he said. “I had to do it like a gentleman.”
Apart from being a three-time Grand Slam singles winner, Sharapova is a much-sought-after celebrity, regularly listed by the media among the world’s richest and most beautiful people.
Her personal life has been occupying the press ever since the then-18-year-old stormed into fame, winning the Wimbledon Championship.
Most recently, she was reported to be dating tennis pro Andy Roddick, and then Charlie Ebersol, the son of NBC sports chairman Dick Ebersol. Especially notorious is Sharapova’s love affair with the frontman of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, who ungentlemanly made public the details of his sex life with Sharapova immediately after the break-up.
