PACE urges Russia to sign up to Human Rights protocol

PACE urges Russia to sign up to Human Rights protocol

The Council of Europe has urged Russia to sign up to a protocol aimed at making the legal system more efficient. Protocol 14 includes increasing the terms of judges from six to nine years in order to speed up trials.

All European member states have signed up but Russia says parts of the document are not acceptable.

After meeting the State Duma speaker, PACE President Rene van der Linden said he is disappointed with Russia's decision.
