A Halloween crowd in the Spanish city of Madrid has left three women trampled to death, with two more people seriously wounded.

According to Spanish police, two of the victims were 18 years old, and the third was 25.

A flare was reportedly thrown into the crowd at the Madrid Arena, and caused people to panic.

"There was a human crush at the only exit they had because the others were sealed off," a witness told Spain’s Cadena Ser radio station.

The building, which can hold up to 10,000 people, was evacuated after the incident, which occurred at 4am on Thursday local time (03.00 GMT).
