Italian PM resigns after losing confidence vote
Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has resigned after losing a critical confidence vote in the Senate. Though he survived a similar vote in the Parliament's lower house, the defection of former supporters cost him Thursday's count.
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano must now decide whether to call a snap election – which former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party looks poised to win.
