Police have detained a man who attempted to hold several officers hostage with what later turned out to be fake explosives in a police station in Southern Russia's Volgograd Region.
Russian news agencies reported that a 50-year-old man with an extensive criminal record entered a police station in the town of Frolovo and threatened to blow it up. Russian news agency Itar-Tass quoted a source in the local law enforcement as saying that the man demanded a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in person.
Regional police commanders and a special police unit for dealing with hostage-takings were urgently called on site. All people were evacuated from the building that housed the police station and from nearby buildings.
About two hours after the incident, police stormed the building and detained the man. The bomb seized from him proved to be a fake.
