Environmental Watchdog official Oleg Mitvol might be rebuked

The RIA Novosti and Interfax news agencies have been reporting that the head of Russia's Environmental Watchdog Sergey Say has proposed his deputy, Oleg Mitvol, be rebuked.

A spokesman for the Minister of Natural Resources has confirmed an official letter has been received demanding a check on Mr Mitvol's activities.

Earlier, news agencies reported that Mr Say demanded Mr Mitvol be fired.

Oleg Mitvol himself says he is ready for any checks on his activities.

He's been Deputy Head of the Environmental Watchdog since April 2004 and is known for a number of crackdowns on Russian and foreign natural resources enterprises, as well as pulling down private houses located in protected water zones.
