A Cuban military officer has been killed after being taken hostage in an attempted hijacking at Havana airport. The man was shot as he tried to stop two army deserters seizing an empty plane bound for the U.S.
The soldiers stormed a bus carrying several passengers and made their way to the airport. They were among three army recruits who escaped from their military base on Saturday, shooting a fellow soldier and wounding another as they fled. All three are now in custody.
Cuba says the U.S. policy of giving near automatic asylum to Cubans can result in people leaving by extreme means.
