African Union forces to back Somali transitional government

African Union forces to back Somali transitional government

The first African Union peacekeepers have arrived in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Part of a 1,700-strong force promised by Uganda's government, the contingent will try to secure the Horn of Africa.

Their mission will be to help Somalia's transitional government to fight daily militant attacks.

Facing shortages of money and equipment, the AU has managed to raise only half of the required 8,000 troops.

Meanwhile, Burundi, Nigeria, Malawi and Ghana are also expected to contribute.
