A strong fire swept through the historic basilica of Saint Donatien in the city of Nantes, western France, on Monday morning. The startling images of the blaze engulfing the roof have appeared on social media.

Thick black smoke can be seen several blocks from the basilica. Firemen are trying to tackle the blaze, local media report. There is no information yet about any casualties or the cause of the fire.

The fire started at 10.30am and soon engulfed the whole roof of the church, local authorities said according to the Local.

About 60 firemen are trying to save the Nantes’ site, one of the tweets says.

Basilica Saint Donatien was built in the late 19th century and is one of two basilicas in Nantes.

The fire may have been caused by sealing works on the roof, the local fire engineering service (SDIS) says as cited by 20minutes.fr.

The fire is reported to be “under control” and firefighters are trying to save works of arts from the basilica.
