BrahMos production ramps up at new facility
BrahMos Aerospace’s manufacturing facility in the northern Indian city of Lucknow has become the country’s largest, boosting production of the missile by 20%.
The new facility has manufactured the first batch of the missiles, BrahMos Aerospace co-director Aleksandr Maksichev told Sputnik. Manufacturing of “the second batch is now underway,” he added.
India has four BrahMos manufacturing facilities, with the others located in Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram in southern India and Pilani in the northwestern state of Rajasthan.
Maksichev said the commissioning of the facility has significantly enhanced both the speed and capacity of BrahMos missile manufacturing.
Named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, the BrahMos is among the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It was used to deadly effect by India last year in a brief military clash with Pakistan.
Global interest for the missile has since picked up. New Delhi has already sold it to the Philippines and Vietnam, and talks are underway with Indonesia and the UAE.
BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture by Indian and Russian defense manufacturers, posted record revenue in the previous fiscal year.
