India eyes innovation and sustainability as BRICS chair – foreign minister

India has said its presidency of BRICS 2026 will reflect the need to strengthen capacities, promote innovation, and ensure sustainable development.

New Delhi will seek to bring together the potential of BRICS countries for greater global welfare, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday while launching the logo and website of BRICS 2026.

“Our chairship theme – building for resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability – reflects our belief that cooperation among BRICS members can help address shared challenges in a balanced and inclusive manner,” he stated.

Jaishankar noted that 2026 marks 20 years since the inception of BRICS, which has steadily evolved into a significant platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing economies.

The theme of the logo conveys how BRICS draws strength from the collective contributions of its members while respecting their distinct identities.

India has taken over the presidency of BRICS amid sweeping interventions by the administration of US President Donald Trump which have had major geopolitical implications across the globe.

Brazil formally transferred the group’s presidency to India at the BRICS sherpas’ meeting in Brasilia in December.

Jaishankar said the newly launched BRICS India website will serve as a common platform during India’s presidency.

“It will provide information on meetings, initiatives and outcomes, and will facilitate greater transparency and engagement. It will also help in the timely dissemination of information.

Beijing has expressed willingness to work for greater BRICS cooperation.

“China stands ready to work with other parties to promote high-quality development of greater BRICS cooperation, and make new contributions to an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization,”
the Chinese ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, said in a post on X.
