Free trade in prospect as EU eyes Russia pact

Analysts say a free trade pact between Russia and the European Union is all about ensuring Russia offers long-term guarantees of secure energy supplies for Western Europe.

EU Commission President Jose Manual Barroso reckons it premature to say when any agreement might happen but hopes to kick-start talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as November.The deal would follow Russian accession to the World Trade Organisation.
