Mass brawl breaks out at Samsung plant in Vietnam (VIDEO)

A protest involving hundreds of construction workers started at a Samsung Display plant in Vietnam on Tuesday.

According to Vietnamese online newspaper VnExpress, employees clashed with guards at the plant in the country's northern Bac Ninh Province.

An eyewitness told the media the conflict began when a male worker was pushed from behind and fell out of the line while waiting to clock in with other workers at the gate after lunch. The reason is unclear, he added.

"The guards pulled him into their room and there was a fight. Many other workers were angry and chased after the guards," said the witness.

He added that after a couple of tense hours, police came and cleared the crowd but more than ten officers remained to prevent further clashes.

A representative from Samsung Vietnam denied a confrontation took place, saying there was no conflict between the company and its Vietnamese workers.

“It was a complete misunderstanding between guards and construction workers when a security check into the construction site took longer than expected," the company said, adding that one of the guards was injured and all the employees are fine.

A screen production unit of the South Korean company, Samsung Display has recently received a license to invest $2.5 billion in Vietnam. The extra funding is expected to boost its total investment in the country to $6.5 billion and will increase the plant's capacity to 220 million products a year from the current 180 million.

Statistics showed that Samsung was Vietnam's biggest exporter last year. The company earned almost $40 billion in revenue from shipping electronics, up 10 percent from 2015. It contributed 23 percent to Vietnam’s total export earnings.
