The Danish Air Force has released incredible footage of pilots test driving a new helicopter in the extreme conditions of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The pilots put the new Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopter through it’s paces in choppy waters around the Faroe Islands, halfway between Norway and Iceland.

They had the unenviable task of test-flying the choppers in "wild" conditions to find out whether they could cope.

The Danish Air Force published a video on Facebook on Tuesday showing the pilots attempting to land the Seahawk on a Navy patrol vessel.

Despite strong swells, powerful gales and crashing waves the pilots manage to expertly guide the chopper down on the back of the patrol vessel without any mishap.

The Danish Air Force received three MH60R Seahawks in June after ordering nine of them in 2012. The remaining choppers will be delivered in 2018. The total cost of the machines, plus logistical support, is reportedly $686 million.
