‘Legal weed. And dolphins,’ let's #CalExit: Calls for California to secede after Trump’s win

The latest trending topic on social media has become #CalExit, as Californians express their eagerness to break away from the US after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.

Many cited the fact that California is the sixth biggest economy in the world, so it would be reasonable to go it alone.

There is also the issue of recreational marijuana on the table – the state has just voted to legalize it.

Some suggested that California should take pro-Hillary Oregon and Washington along, too.

Actually, the idea of #CalExit has already gone beyond a Twitter joke: ‘Yes California Independence Campaign’ group is holding a rally in Sacramento on Wednesday to gather support.

“In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children,” the group’s manifesto states.

Another popular hashtag was #Caleavefornia, with tweets from outraged Californians as they followed the presidential election results.
