Greenland’s incredible ice sheet has been captured from a height of 40,000ft (12,100 meters) in a breathtaking photo by NASA’s Oceans Melting Greenland team or OMG.
The stunning image of the world’s second largest ice body, after the Antarctic sheet, was taken aboard NASA’s G-III aircraft on Saturday.
The OMG team has been mapping glacier heights around the entire coast of Greenland, observing changing water temperatures and glaciers reaching the ocean to assess the extent to which the oceans are melting Greenland’s ice.
The experiment is the first of its kind, according to the space agency.

The team is led by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who began observations last year and will continue to do so until 2020.
The organization says this project will complement previous observations of Greenland’s melting ice sheet, carried out by satellite sensors such as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment.
