Russian students from the Northern Caucasus region are still being held by the Egyptian authorities because the latter fear an attempted plot against Obama, investigative journalist Wayne Madsen said to RT.

Meanwhile, ahead of US President Obama's visit to Egypt, calls are growing for the release of Russian students who were arrested during a security clampdown in the capital, Cairo.

Last week, Egyptian security forces rounded up around 200 students at Cairo's Al-Azhar University, an ancient hub of Islamic scholarship that is co-hosting Obama's visit on Thursday.
