Five detainees at the US Guantanamo Bay camp have taken full responsibility for the 9/11 attacks that claimed the lives of over 3,000 people in New York in 2001, according to a report in The New York Times newspaper.

The men include Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who describes himself as ‘the mastermind’ behind the attacks.

According to the paper, the men expressed pride at their accomplishment and see US accusations against them as “a badge of honor”.

The confession comes in a document titled ‘The Islamic Response to the Government’s Nine Accusations’ – filed on their behalf.

Several of them have already said earlier that they planned the 9/11 attacks and that they sought martyrdom.

The cases of the men are currently suspended as President Obama halted the military proceedings at Guantanamo shortly after his inauguration in January.
