The former Democratic congressman and two-time Democratic candidate for president has been indicted by a grand jury on charged of campaign finance violations regarding an affair he had with a staffer.

The case against Edwards alleges that he used political campaign funds to support and over up an extramarital affair he had with a campaign staffer while running for President in 2008. The case against Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, illegal campaign contributions and false statements. The prosecution argued he used campaign funds to hide his mistress and hide the affair and her pregnancy from his family, the public and other political staffers. Edwards was having an affair with Rielle Hunter who had been working on his campaign and even fathered a child with the woman. The charges follow a two year federal investigation into Edwards’ finances surrounding his campaign and the affair.
