Multiple people were rushed to hospital after lightning struck a pine tree during a PGA Tour event in Atlanta. Video captured the shining pillar of light that scattered debris across a large area.

“There was just a big explosion and then an aftershock so strong you could feel the wind from it,” Brad Uhl of Atlanta told NBC news.

A storm disrupted the third round of the PGA Tour event at East Lake Golf Club after 4pm on Saturday, and spectators went seeking shelter from the rain.

Two lightning strikes hit the course and debris from a tree hit several people, according to a statement by the tournament organizers. Six people were taken to hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Thunderstorms are common in the area at this time of year, and tall trees frequently attract lightning.
