The world’s first virtual reality gym just opened in San Francisco, offering a next-generation workout via a computer games-based distraction technique that aims to put the fun back into exercising.

Black Box VR promises a gym experience like no other by giving users a full-body workout while virtually immersed in another world that requires them to fight battles and beat their opponent.

While diet and exercise will always be the foundation of losing weight and burning fat, distraction is the key to keeping gym-goers motivated, according to Kayla Abeyta, Black Box VR manager.

“The whole idea of how many reps, and how much you lift is not in your mind anymore, it’s actually just beating your opponent and playing the game,” she said.

Each session lasts 30 minutes, in which the user plays a video game with the help of a self-automated resistance cable machine. The system includes the world’s first “hands free” VR controllers, in which sensors track your movements.
