The sound of gunfire coming from the rear entrance of the US embassy in Haiti was on Monday reported by the official Twitter account for the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Shelter in place is in effect for the Embassy compound. If you are traveling to the Embassy, find a safe area to shelter in place,” the tweet stated.

Later on Monday, the Bureau of Consular Affairs tweeted that the “situation” around the embassy had been “resolved” and the warning had been lifted. It did not provide any details on the incident.

The embassy is located in Tabarre, a suburb just outside Port Au Prince, Haiti's capital.

Violence has gripped the city in recent weeks, with hectic demonstrations ongoing over official corruption.
