Herman Cain asked for his nomination to the Federal Reserve Board to be withdrawn, US President Donald Trump has tweeted. The African-American conservative was opposed by Democrats and accused of sexual harassment.
“My friend Herman Cain, a truly wonderful man, has asked me not to nominate him,” Trump said on Monday, adding that he will “respect his wishes” and calling Cain “a great American who truly loves our country.”
Cain is a former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and served as chairman of the board at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in the 1990s. He ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, but bowed out amid accusations of infidelity and sexual harassment, which he denied. The accusations were revived after Trump nominated Cain for the Fed.
At least four Republican senators have reportedly opposed Cain’s nomination, including Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Cory Gardner (R-Colorado) and Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota). Democrats need only four defections in the Senate to block any nomination.
