A police SWAT team has rescued a woman and 11 children from a knife-wielding man, who took them hostage at a hotel in DeKalb County, Georgia, early on Tuesday.

The man stabbed himself in the neck and was taken to hospital in a critical condition, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The situation began around 2am in a room at the Rite4Us Inn & Suites and lasted for five hours, according to DeKalb County Police Major Tonya Dedrick. A man holed himself up inside the room after a domestic dispute with a woman, she said.

The police arrived at the scene after receiving a domestic-related assault report. The hotel was evacuated during the standoff.

It was not immediately clear whether the assailant, the woman or any of the children involved were somehow related.

The man later died of the wound.
