President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree to ban the supply of arms, ammunition and military hardware to Libya as clashes rage on in the North African state.
Hence, Moscow has joined in upholding the sanctions envisaged by the UN Security Council’s Resolution No. 1970 that was adopted on February 26. The restrictions were imposed on the Libyan regime as an international response to Muammar Gaddafi’s bloody crackdown against dissenters.Medvedev ordered a ban on the export from Russia to Libya of all types of armaments, ammunition, combat vehicles, military hardware, munitions and spare parts, the Kremlin said on Thursday. Russia will also stop providing services to Libya to train personnel and cease furnishing technical and financial assistance.All cargo bound for Libya or coming from that country will be inspected on information that such shipments may include items mentioned in the decree.The restrictions are not extended to the deliveries of non-lethal munitions, intended for humanitarian purposes, including individual protective equipment. The document specifies, in particular, bulletproof vests and helmets, which are taken temporarily to Libya by UN officials, journalists and members of humanitarian organizations.
