Britain's main suspect in the killing of former security officer Aleksandr Litvinenko says he may run for mayor of Sochi – the Russian Black Sea resort chosen to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Lugovoy, a former Russian security officer, was elected to Russia's State Duma in 2007 as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Lugovoy has rejected suggestions his election could prompt Britain and a number of other countries to boycott the Olympics.

He remains Britain's chief suspect in the murder of Aleksandr Litvinenko who died of polonium-210 poisoning in 2006, shortly after meeting Lugovoy.

Moscow has repeatedly refused to hand Lugovoy over to UK authorities for trial, saying his extradition is outlawed by the Russian constitution.
