Washington and Kabul: status unclear

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai was in the US capital this week to pledge Kabul's continuing support for the NATO campaign in his country.

During a meeting with President Obama, both said they would fight on for Afghanistan's democratic future.

However, journalist Tony Blankley says this show of unity is built on shaky foundations.

“This is one of the most embarrassing episodes of American diplomacy since WWII, I believe. For the last year the president and his national security advisors, the Vice President … have all been publicly badmouthing our ally – President Karzai,” Tony Blankley recalled.

“The president of Afghanistan naturally responded by talking about maybe dealing with the Taliban,” Blankley pointed out. “It is clear that currently Washington and Kabul do not have an agreement on what our policy is,” he added.
