A woman in Russia’s Far East lost her arm and ended up in the emergency ward after she was attacked by a bear she was trying to feed through the bars of the cage.

The mauling occurred in a mini-zoo located at a recreation center near the Far East city of Blagoveshchensk, local police said. The woman stretched her arm into a cage with two brown bears to feed them, when one of the animals attacked her. The woman was reportedly intoxicated.

She was hospitalized with severe bite wounds on her left arm and shoulder with, reportedly, a scalp laceration. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, the arm had to be amputated, local health officials confirmed.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, as well as the mini-zoo itself. An animal welfare bill that was recently introduced in Russia bans, among other things, petting zoos and circuses that use wild animals but fail to ensure safety.
