Florida is showing how individual states will have to wage their own war to defeat the madness of critical race theory

Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis has signalled his intent not to have critical race theory taught in the state’s schools. More governors need to follow his lead, as it’s clear the federal government will do nothing to prevent it.

When Joe Biden went on a spree of executive orders to overturn Donald Trump’s policies, one of the biggest mistakes he made was to eliminate the 1776 project designed to prevent critical race theory being taught at school pupils. In doing so, Biden single-handedly destroyed a move that kept anti-American ideas out of American schools.

As I’ve discussed before, critical race theory is an idea that attempts to completely rewrite history and portray America as an evil, racist place. Although Chris Rufo of the Discovery Institute’s Center on Wealth & Poverty has discussed battling critical race theory, the biggest, quickest victories against it will come at state level.

Ron DeSantis, the current governor of Florida, has shown the way ahead by announcing that Florida’s school curriculum would “expressly exclude” critical race theory. He stated, “There’s no room in our classrooms for things like critical race theory. Teaching kids to hate their country and to hate each other is not worth one red cent of taxpayer money.”

This is a big strike towards those pushing a woke agenda in America. The far left have education in the United States in the palm of their hands. But we cannot have students coming out of educational institutions sporting radical ideas that ultimately lead them to anti-American sentiment. It’s idiotic to throw tax dollars at an institution that ultimately undermines the foundations of your nation.

However, this move by DeSantis is one of the wisest that’s been made at state level in a long time. The US operates under a federalist system, and the states have a lot of autonomy. That being the case, a governor like DeSantis can urge the state legislature to take up his alternative proposals with the education department, which include the content of the curriculum. And more state governors need to follow his lead.

Ultimately, America is at a cultural crossroads. Down one road, you have a massive amount of division that is being disguised as unity. That road is paved with ideas like critical race theory, which only seeks to split people on the lines of race. Down the other road is the classic American way, which prioritizes life, liberty and property. These ideas do not tolerate divisions along the lines of race. They are the bedrock of America, and should be preserved.

Ultimately, each state is going to have to learn that, at a time like this, we cannot rely on the federal government to do the right thing for the United States. Some state governments can get too complacent when a right-wing president is at the head of the country, but DeSantis has demonstrated the best way to win the war of ideas in the short term.
