Senators say bipartisan deal reached 'in principle' to avert 2nd shutdown

Senators from the Democratic and Republican parties have said that an agreement has been struck to prevent another government shutdown, AP reports, citing Republican Sen. Richard Shelby and Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey. The lawmakers announced the long-awaited breakthrough after a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill on Monday evening, just ahead of US President Donald Trump's address at a rally in Texas. The details of the deal have not been revealed. The negotiations dragged on over the weekend with little progress, as Democrats insisted on capping immigrant detentions by federal authorities – a demand the GOP categorically rejected. Trump signed a three-week stopgap bill to reopen the government after a record-breaking shutdown began on January 25. He also warned he would invoke another shutdown if Senate Democrats did not agree to fund his border wall.
