6.1 magnitude earthquake hits near Kaktovik, Alaska

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Alaska on Sunday. The United States Geological Survey registered the earthquake as having an epicenter 2.6 km below the ground. The earthquake struck 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Kaktovik in Alaska. The coastal area town is home to 239 people, according to the latest census. The surrounding North Slope Borough has a population of 9,430.
