Special units of India’s police have raided hideouts of Maoist rebels in the forested area of Maharashtra state. The encounter resulted in the death of 14 rebels, according to officer Prashant Diwate. He added that the police suffered no casualties during the fighting. The insurgency against the government by the militants, inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, has been going on since 1967. The Maoists demand land and jobs for farmers. In 2010, the rebels launched what is believed to be their deadliest attack against the Indian Army, killing 76 soldiers.
