Former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik, who announced his plans to run for president in 2018, has been deported from the United Arab Emirates to Egypt, Shafik’s lawyer wrote on Facebook. Shafik's daughter, May Shafik, confirmed to Reuters that the politician was taken from his home by the UAE authorities. An Egyptian judicial source told the agency that the ex-PM wasn’t wanted in any criminal cases at the moment, adding that “we have no information about a deportation order.” Shafik is seen as the strongest potential opponent of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi if he decides to run for a second term in April’s election.
