Jury taking its time in illegal immigrant murder trial that sparked ‘sanctuary city’ debate

A 12-member jury in California’s Superior Court in San Francisco has failed to reach a verdict in the trial over the murder of 32-year-old Katherine “Kate” Steinle. The jury deliberates again Wednesday afternoon before the Thanksgiving holiday break. Unless the jury reaches a verdict before then, deliberations will continue the following week. Mexican citizen Garcia Zarate, 54, is being charged in Steinle’s shooting death, which occurred as the woman sat with her father at San Francisco's Pier 14 in July 2015. The case subsequently sparked national debate on the so-called “sanctuary cities” in the US, an important issue for President Donald Trump during his campaign in 2016. (San Francisco Examiner)
