Nevzlin's lawyer told the court that he could not respond to the charges, as he had not been given enough time to read what his client is being charged with. Leonid Nevzlin is charged with ordering murders of several businessmen and officials in late 1990s and early 2000s. Nevzlin is being tried in absentia on charges of tax evasion, fraud and involvement in a number of contract killings. He is living in Israel in self-exile, and although he is on the international wanted list, the country has refused to extradite him to Russia, saying more evidence against him is required.
